Dr. Akshath R. Shetty

I am working as a postdoctoral research associate in the Radiation Surface Sciences and Engineering Lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. My research focuses on the study of plasma-surface interactions and active chemistry during surface and interface modification on a variety of materials.

  1. Involved in preparation and characterization of films of various compositions deposited on various substrates and studied its crystallographic, structural and mechanical properties.
  2. Conducted practical’s for 3rd year graduate students. Teaching them to deposit ZnO:Al films by sputtering and characterizing its properties using various techniques like XRD, Van der Pauw method, Hall effect, optical properties, and surface morphology study by AFM.

Research Interests

Modification and functionalization of advanced surfaces and interfaces using plasma and low-energy inert gas ions (e.g. He, Ar); Thin-film deposition; Characterization of nanomaterials; Imaging and surface analysis: AFM, STM, SEM, TEM, XPS; Crystallography studies: texture, phase, stress.
